Highlighting might be a little risky since I don't know if you have gold or red in your hair. Meaning whether you have warm or cool tones in your hair.
I would suggest buying a retouch kit and coloring the area you original medium brown.
You can get a retouch kit at Sally's or most supermarkets, etc.
