Tricks to Growing Longer Hair - Stop the Split Ends!

by Elizabeth
(Atlanta, GA)

I've always enjoyed having long hair, but at a certain point it just seemed to stop growing. In reality what was happening was that I had to cut my hair fairly often to keep the split ends away. Two years ago I was talking about my hair problems with a friend, and she suggested two things.

When using conditioner, use twice as much as you think you need, and use it mostly on the last six inches of your hair. Whatever product might be left on your hands you can use on the rest of your hair, but the vast majority should be on the last six inches.

After you've washed and conditioned your hair, turn the tap to cold and wash your hair out with water as cold as you can stand it. This cold wash tightens up each hair making it stronger and better able to handle brushing when your hair is wet.

Two years of this regimen and my hair has reached my hips and looks great! I can go several months between hair cuts, and it's made my life easier and made me more confident about my appearance. It doesn't take any more time than your usual method, but the results become obvious within a few months.

Best wishes,
Elizabeth

Taking Care of Long Hair
by: Kelly

Elizabeth,
I agree with you and then some!

I've had waist-to-hip length hair for years now, and you are absolutely right about the tips needing extra conditioner, and hot water damaging your hair- but I've recently discovered something else that is really helping me.

I've always had super-greasy hair- had to wash it every day or it would just be a mess. What I didn't realize was that, somewhere between 18 and 24, something changed and I was abusing my hair- not to mention my budget- by putting so many chemicals in it. The last foot or so was persistantly frizzy, and I was starting to get way more split ends.

I've started making a chamomile and honey tea most nights, and using that- lukewarm- as a rinse for my hair, only doing the shampoo and conditioner thing every third night, and it is working great! (I get my hair wet, and pour the rinse over my hair, making very sure to get the ends best, and I let it sit until I'm done with the shower, then I just rinse with cool water quickly)

My hair is much healthier, more manageable, and shinier now, and I think it would be a great system for anyone, especially in the winter when your hair tends to be so much drier anyway.
