Tips and tricks for the Curly Hair Girl

by serena
(Oaxaca, Mexico)

Oh the trials and tribulations of those of us who have lived a lifetime under a halo of frizz. To have survived the straight-hair '70s and the over-processed '80s was to have mistreated and re-mistreated those lovely curls.

I made so many mistakes on the rocky road to learning how to treat curly hair--there was the severe hair-brushing, the attack of the curling iron in an attempt for the feathered Farrah, the plethora of drying shampoos and goopy conditioners, the initiation into chemical straightenings, and the apathy of pulling it into a ponytail day after day.

A curly hair girl forum or series of articles on this site could save many of my kind from years of struggle and tears. It would appeal to a diverse audience, too, including Jewish, African-American, permed, and natural curly girls. It could address a myriad of issues from products and product combinations to cool salons and the latest curl-friendly styles.

My recent epiphanies about curly hair care--rarely shampoo, squeeze out wet hair before applying leave-in conditioner, and never touch it while it's drying--were hard-earned revelations after years of curly hair abuse.

Curly Hair
by: Meridith

Hi, my name is Meridith. I have really curly, kinky hair and I find the best way to keep frizz under control in the winter without having to use a ton of products is to leave just a little conditioner in it after a shower and scrunch as it dries. I also wash it much less often in the winter and it seems to help alot. Thanks.

Serena,

What an interesting post. I can see this becoming a very popular thread on our forums.

You articulate you passion about your hair so well! Why don't you invite some friends to join you here to discuss this further?

By the way, a natural tea tree oil shampoo will really help your hair restore it's proper PH levels which will strengthen it and make your other techniques work even better.

(There's a great one on our featured products page :)
