Split ends with long hair

I've had very long hair (below my waist) for nearly a decade, but recently I've started to get noticeable split ends on the last 1 - 2" of my hair.

I use a conditioner every time I shampoo, and I regularly trim my hair - is there anything else that I can do to help stop the split ends? I usually only trim 1/4 - 1/2" at a time - should I be trimming more to get rid of the split ends?
