Long hair = Dry hair and split ends?

by Virginia
(San Antonio, TX, United States)

I had short hair for most of my life. It was lustrous, thick, and no matter how much I chemically enhanced the color, I never saw a split end.

Then I grew it out. Even though it's now back to it's natural state, it's dry, the ends split and it frizzes and tangles horribly.

I've tried the more inexpensive store-bought remedies, mostly hot oil treatments or special shampoos. They help for a few days, but never for long.

I really want the long, lustrous hair that my grandmother had. Can anyone help?

Long Hair Help
by: Zac

Virginia,

Sarah brings up some good points. I would suggest using a Tea Tree Oil shampoo to restore proper PH levels, and add life and luster to your hair.

As for styling products, we have some great natural products here with tea tree oil and numerous beneficial herbal ingredients to make your hair healthier and look it's best.

You may also want to have a deep conditioning treatment done at a salon once a month to help with your frizz and split ends.

Here is a link to the products I mentioned above:

Best wishes,

I had the same problem...
by: Sarah

I had extremely thick and beautiful hair when I was younger as well. People I didn't know would honestly come up to me in stores and start playing with my hair! Then I completely ruined it in junior high and high school with cheap drug store hair dye.

It's been years since I've dyed my hair, but I had the exact same problem you're describing. Unfortunately, you'll probably never have virgin hair again, but there are some things that really help.

First of all, if there is a Sally Beauty Supply near you, you should pick up their Ion brand Extreme Moisture Nourishing Mask and use it every time you wash your hair.

Second, you didn't mention whether or not you use heat styling tools. If you do you absolutely have to use a heat protector. I use V05 heat protector gel with the blow dryer and Ion heat protector spray (from Sally) with my flat iron.

Third, trim your hair every 6 weeks. This is a pain when you are trying to grow it out, but it really helps.

It's also good to avoid using products (shampoo, conditioner, styling products) that contain alcohol, but this is nearly impossible with grocery/drug store products.

Hope this helps.
