Itchy Flaky Scalp Problems

by Malicen

Since moving to the Daytona Beach area about a year ago, my scalp has become increasingly itchy and flaky. My hair is very thick, and I tried layering it to increase the air circulation to my scalp.

I tried every over-the-counter dandruff shampoo I could find and they did not help at all.I tried hypo-allergenic shampoo and conditioner that had no added color or fragrance and experienced temporary relief from the itching but the dandruff was still a problem.

I take a mega multi- vitamin every day and wondered if increasing mega fatty acid supplements would help- it did wonders for my little old dog! I even tried pet shampoos for problem skin, such as an herbal medicated shampoo with tea tree oil and salicyclic acid, and an iodine shampoo, all to no avail.Super-remoisturizing conditioner made the itching worse and then there was a foul odor and a sort of wet flaking.

I work in a pet grooming salon, so my hair is usually damp, plus I am exposed to many allergens. My doctor advised using mild shampoo and conditioner daily after work and taking antihistamines evey single day. There was no improvement, the itching was worse and my scalp grew crusty .

Recently my doctor prescribed an antibiotic and steroidal allergy spray for my sinus and allergy issues. After taking the prescribed round of antibitics and using the nasal spray for seven days my scalp problems were over. Now if only I could get rid of the headache...

Dandruff or Dermatitis?
by: Anonymous

Malicen,

What you probably were experiencing was dermatitis of the scalp which is very similar to dandruff.

At the slightest sign of a re-occurance, shampoos will not solve your problem since they aren't in contact with your scalp long enough to be effective. And you definitely want to rinse them out well!

Now, I experienced the same problem, and use FlakeFree therapeutic styling gel with zinc, tea tree and peppermint oil, and numeous beneficial herbal ingredients to keep mine under control.
This is the best solution I have found for dandruff, dermatitis, eczema, or just simple dry scalp.

You can check it out right here on our site.
