How to get a close shave?

by Samantha Joy
(Liberty Hill, Texas)

My husband has just recently started a beard, and neither he nor I know what sort of razor to keep it looking neat and well trimmed.

My safety razors (the ones I use on my legs) don't do the job, and they're pink which offends his dignity anyway. :)

His electric razor has been fine for many years, but it doesn't do a good job of "edging" (is that what you call it?--The line between beard and skin isn't as clear cut as I'd like it to be.)

So far our best option has been to send him to a barber shop once a week, but is there a way to do this at home without him looking like he's been attacked by a beauty school dropout?

Do you have razor recommendations, shaving cream recommendations, anything that can help us?

Thanks in advance.

Shaving Tips
by: Zac

Samantha,

Depending on how long he wants to let it grow, I would recommend buying an inexpensive set of electric hair clippers. It's what I use when I let my beard grow.

You can get a set for about $10. They come with several attachments so you can choose the length you want.

For instance, the #4 attachment will leave his beard about 1/2 inch long, and the #8 will leave it 1 inch.

Just be sure to trim with the grain of his beard and not against it. Almost like you were combing it. Keep the clipper flat against his face, not angled or tilted.

What this does for my beard is keep it uniform and trims off those wild odd ball whiskers that shoot out.

It really is easier than you might think. In no time you will get real good at it.

Now, to get a nice clean edge line, remove the attachment and come straight in towards the edge with the clippers to create a nice clean edge line.

You probably will still want to shave a little on the edge line, so I would recommend using a shaving gel.

Use as little as you can so you can see the edge line and shave away from the line to clean up remaining whiskers.

Hope that helps,
Zac
