Hair Help for a Clueless Woman

by Kimberly Wilson
(Bremerton, WA)

1.) I have long hair but it is very weak. I have bought stay-in conditioners that say help detangle hair to try and prevent the tearing of hair strands due to knots. I have bought shampoos and conditioners that say they strengthen hair. I have been doing these two things for about three months, and I still have major breakage. I do not have problems with split ends, just breakage about and inch or two from the root. What can I do about this?

2.) I have grown my hair long because I figure it will be the best canvas. I have always had the plain, straight hair and I want a new style. I figure if my hair is long, it can be cut to any style, which I imagine is better than starting with short hair and trying a new style. The best articles I can find on the internet all refer to hairstyles corresponding to different face shapes. I have absolutely no clue what face shape I have, so those articles have not really been a big help. When looking at pictures, I gravitate towards the messy, layered look. I have the tiniest bit of a wave in my hair when I do not blow-dry it. Would cutting layers into my hair help it get wavier? Also, I think I have attached a picture, so if I did, would you guys help me decide what face shape I have? Or help give me ideas on the styles you think will compliment me? I appreciate all the help! Thank you mega-tons!

Hair Breakage Advise
by: Kathy

Kimberly,

Thanks for your question, this is one that will help many others while we help you.

OK, number one, if you are pulling your hair up a lot, that is more than likely what is breaking your hair off because it is constantly pulling tight on the hair.

I think if you would cut your hair to shoulder length or a little longer, and start out with longer layers towards the bottom would give you fullness around the chin area where your face is very narrow.

This would give you more fullness and you would get the perfect oval face shape. A slight side bang would be stylish and take away from your longer forehead.

About hair products, you need to get a re-moisturizer from a professional hair care line such as Paul Mitchell. Use it once a week for about two weeks and see how that works. Most hair salons carry it. Then once every two weeks. This is a deep moisturizer.

Use a heat protector on your hair before using blow dryers, flat irons, or curling irons. Always use professional products because they are guaranteed.

When getting your hair cut, have them put some miscellaneous layers up a little higher in your hair, by twisting small pieces of hair and cutting it with a razor, which will give you more fullness.

Hope this helps, be sure to come back here and let us know how you do, will you?

Best wishes,
Kathy,
