Conditioning and Styling Extra Thick Hair

by Christine M.
(Michigan)

I'm of mixed European and Sicilian (primarily Sicilian) descent, and I have hair so thick that I've had people commenting on that characteristic since I was a teen. Unfortunately, the hair is also so thick that it's very difficult for me to keep tangle-free, and to style. My hair ranges from shoulder-length to mid-back, and it tends to be straight or a tad wavy.

My question is a two-parter:

1) How often should I condition my hair?

I never used conditioner as a child, but since turning 16 or so, I've been using a fair amount about once a month. I've heard from some people that I should be doing it every day, but I'm skeptical of this because of how oily it makes my hair feel. What's your professional opinion?

2) Apart from conditioning, how can I make the chore of styling easier on myself?

Are there certain styles that would be easier for me to maintain, or certain styling products that would help more with my particular hair type? I've given up on everything but headbands and ponytails, and as a young woman entering the job market, I feel a little silly going to an interview with an "exercise" hairdo.

How to condition and style thick hair
by: Kathy

First off I think I would put some long layers towards the bottom of your hair and have them texturize them, which means have them cut triangles into the hair.

I would also have the hairdresser use her texturizing sheers about three inches from the bottom of your hair, which would get rid of some of the thickness. Try doing a slight angle around the face towards the bottom of your hair,to give it a little more style without making it complicated.

I would also suggest that you try using a flat iron on your hair which would make your hair look sleek and shiny and it would last a couple of days without messing with it. The flat iron you need to use needs to be at least 450 degrees. You can purchase these at Sally's beauty supplies. With your thick hair you need something that really works well.

As for products use a professional heat protector on your hair before using the flat iron, you can get these at any salon and these product are guranteed.

I think you need to use a daily conditoner every time you shampoo only putting it towards the middle of your hair and down, not putting any where near your scalp, you don't need it there.

I hope this will help you out some and good luck with your new career life.

Kathy
