Color on Gray Hair

by Maitlda
(Florida)

All of my life I have always wanted blonde hair ( like Gwen Stafani's color), but unfortunately my hair is a medium to dark brown color naturally. Everytime it is lightened, it looks "cheap" either because the color is so artificial or because roots are visible after only a week, and I really have to color it every two weeks just to maintain it.

I have even tried high lift color and used a number 40 developer, as opposed to the standard 20 that comes in the box. Now, my hair is gray and looks almost white. It is short in length (very short bob cut) and the texture is very stiff and hard (only since the gray hair came in has its texture changed).

If I go to put blonde color on it, will it still give me those same awful results I had when I was younger, or will the color actually look like the picture on the box? I am trying to go with a medium ash blonde result. I don't want anything to look "orangey" or have any redness or brassiness to it. I usually use permanent color because I like the results. Any help or advice you can offer me would be most appreciated.

How to color Gray Hair
by: Kathy

Box color is not true to the pictures on the box, it is very drying and the end result can be disastrous. I would not recommend an ash color because that is where your gray or green colors will come from. You are going for that white blonde which is going to be hard to get if you are a naturally dark headed. 40 volume will probably not bring you up to that white blond because your underlying tone is red or orange. If you are mostly gray than you should be able to do it easier but your still probably going to need to bleach to a light yellow and use a toner that has a purple in it and it should make it that white blonde.

Use a very good re-moiturizer from a salon they should be able to help you with what you need, and these products are guanteed to help and inprove your hair.

The upkeep on blond hair is going to be every 2 to 4 weeks. The things we need to do to stay beautiful.

I hope this helped you out.
