Burning scalp with no pink pigment, always white with some blue colors on the crown of my head.

by Mallory
(Neenah, Wisconsin)

Lately within the past two months i have had severe burning on my entire scalp when i get out of the shower.

At first i thought it was the products i was using so i switched products a couple of times and that didnt seem to work.

Then I figured because it was getting cold out (i live in NE wisconsin) that it was the dry weather.

But when i went to get my hair cut the lady at a very upscale salon said it was awkward that after massaging my scalp for a while, there was no pink pigment, my scalp stayed white and there was a blueish tint to the crown of my head. Which is where it is most sensitive.

I am Narcolpetic and Cataplectic and prescribed to Zoloft for bi-polar. Also for the Narcolepsy I am prescribed Vyvanse and Xyrem. Would those medications be any link to my issue.

My mother had Psoriosis on her scalp very badly but the cosmetologist did a testing for it with her eyes because she is familiar with it and said it wasn't on the lines of that.

So any idea to what could be going on with me? Maybe loss of blood flow?

It sounds like scalp psoriasis
by: Nicole

I have the same scalp condition - never red or pink, usually white or greyish and itchy/ flaky. When the psoriasis is flaring up, ALL styling products burn like hell.

Please see a dermatologist. I just found a great one who prescribed clobex shampoo and a clobetasol (sp?) ointment that works wonders.

Best of luck to yo.

Burning Scalp Cause

Answer:

Mallory,

Your medication is known for numerous side effects, although blood circulation problems don't seem to be common.

It is possible this is related to your cataplexy. Since you are on several medications for narcolepsy and bi-polar I would get with your doctor and explain what is going on.

Your doctor may want to modify your dosage or even change your medication.

I am curious about the burning scalp. Does it burn when you are shampooing, after shampooing, or when you apply styling products?

It is common to feel a burning sensation from alcohol based hair spray for instance. Also, some medicated shampoos can cause a burning sensation.

You didn't say whether you have experienced any itching on your scalp, or any other related symptoms.

If you are, you may have scalp dermatitis, but I would need more information to be sure.

One thing you can do, is try a tea tree shampoo to restore PH levels and stimulate hair follicles. Certainly couldn't hurt.

Get back to me with more information if you want.

Best wishes,
Zac
